A great dog birthday video has three parts: a quick look back, one real moment from the day, and a closing shot of the birthday dog. For a 5th birthday, that’s five photos (one per year), the cake, and your dog announcing it’s their birthday. Here’s how to make each part.
Part 1: The “5 years in 5 seconds” montage
Pick one photo from each year, from puppy to now, and show each one for about a second. It’s the part people replay.
- Search your photos by year, or by your dog’s name.
- Try to match the pose: same spot on the couch, same angle, same toy.
- Put them together in Instagram’s Reels editor, CapCut, or your phone’s photo app.
Part 2: One real moment from the day
Film this part for real. Dogs are great at this when food is involved.
- The cake. A dog-safe cake or “pupcake”, and a slow-motion clip of the first bite.
- The unwrapping. A wrapped toy, a dog who doesn’t care about paper, chaos.
- The party hat. Only if they tolerate it for a few seconds. Treat, burst mode, done.
- The birthday walk. Their favorite route, filmed at their eye level.
Cake safety: no chocolate, no xylitol (check the peanut butter), no grapes or raisins, no macadamia nuts. Keep portions small.
Part 3: The birthday dog says it
This is the closing shot people remember, and the one your dog won’t do on cue.
WigglePet’s It’s My Birthday template turns one photo of your dog into a short video where they say “It’s my birthday today! Yay!” plus anything you want to add, in a party scene with a cake or balloons. You can show their age as number candles, so a “5” sits right on the cake, and add a party costume. You hear the voice before anything is made.
If it’s someone else’s birthday, the Happy Birthday template flips it: your dog says “Happy birthday” plus the person’s name.
Videos take one to three minutes, come out vertical for Reels and TikTok, and have no watermark. More examples are on the pet birthday video page.
Putting it together (20 to 30 seconds)
- 0 to 5s: the five-photo montage
- 5 to 20s: the cake or unwrapping clip
- 20 to 30s: your dog’s “It’s my birthday” clip
- Caption: age, a nickname, and one line about their personality
Gotcha day ideas for rescue dogs
A gotcha day (the anniversary of adoption) deserves the same treatment:
- Then and now: the first photo from adoption day next to a photo from today.
- Thank the rescue: tag the shelter or rescue that matched you. They love these posts, and it helps other dogs get adopted.
- A fundraiser: ask followers to donate a few dollars to the rescue in your dog’s honor.
- A thank-you from your dog: WigglePet’s Gotcha Day template has your dog say “Happy Gotcha Day! Thank you for giving me a home and so much love,” plus your own words.
